Fundamentalism occurs in many religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Mormonism, and Islam. Most of the spotlight is currently put on Islamic fundamentalists, because of their links to terrorism. However, fundamentalists from all types of religions cause discord within their religions because of their beliefs in a literal interpretation of sacred texts or outdated traditional practices. For example, the Fundamentalist Mormon church's adherence to polygamy led to their separation from the actualy Mormon church, which had ended their practice of polygamy. Fundamentalists are usually extremists who try to enforce their religion strictly on traditional practices which most followers have abandoned, sometimes advocating violence to implement their cause. Fundamentalists are also usually intolerant of others' beliefs, causing beliefs in their superiority over others.

Genocide: (n) the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group. (Webster's Dictionary) This is an atrocious crime that should not be allowed to continue in our world. After World War II and the Holocaust, the world made a promise of "Never Again." Never again would we allow such a crime to be commited. Never again would we sit back and do nothing. And yet, since World War II, there has been Cambodia, Rwanda, Darfur and countless others. As a human race, we need to work to keep that promise. According to Article 1 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 9, 1948), "The Contracting Parties confirm that genocide, whether committed in time of peace or in time of war, is a crime under international law which they undertake to prevent and to punish.." It is important that our promise and this political decree be upheld. If genocides continue to happen, who knows who will be next? All evil needs to win is for good men to do nothing. "First they came for the communists and I did not speak out because I was not a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me." --Pastor Martin Niemoller Do you want to live in a world where Paster Niemoller's words are the harsh reality? I don't. How do we prevent this? Speak out! Speak out again genocide!

How would you feel if everyone around you looked down on you for what you were, how you were born, or something you couldn't change? How would you feel if you were teased and possibly even beaten, and no one did anything about it? No one supported you, no one viewed you as worth supporting. Because of something that was as natural to you as breathing, you were viewed as sub-human, something dirty and disgusting. Wouldn't simply living from day to day be difficult? Those who face discrimination, who are not allowed to enjoy the same freedoms as everyone else because they are different live an unfair life, and it is up to us to stop it. Think before you act, and don't let anyone tell you that it's ok to treat people differently based on their appearance or sexual orientation or weather or not they're disabled. Some people don't have a voice to fight for themselves, so those of us who have voices must raise up and speak for them. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. For Everyone.
